People assume AI recommendations are a black box. They're not random — they're the predictable output of signals you can influence. Understand what the model is doing and you can become the brand it names.
An LLM isn't searching — it's remembering
When you ask ChatGPT for "the best AI agency in South Africa," it isn't crawling the web live in most cases. It's drawing on a model of the world built from everything it has read. Your job is to make sure that model holds a clear, confident, flattering picture of your business.
That changes everything. You're not optimising a page. You're shaping a memory.
Signal 1: Consistency builds confidence
The model trusts what it sees stated the same way, repeatedly, across many sources. If your business name, location and specialisation match everywhere — website, directories, profiles, articles, social — the model becomes confident. Confident models recommend. When your details contradict each other across the web, the model hedges, and hedged models stay silent.
Signal 2: Specificity beats scale
A vague "full-service agency" competes with ten thousand others and wins none of them. A "done-for-you AI lead engine for US staffing firms" is specific enough that when someone asks exactly that, the model has a clean match. Niche down and you become the obvious answer to a narrower — but real — question.
Signal 3: Third-party corroboration
What others say about you carries more weight than what you say about yourself. Reviews, mentions, case studies, guest articles, being quoted as a source — these are the citations that move you from "a company that exists" to "a company worth recommending."
The entity-clarity checklist
Practical work that makes you recommendable:
Say who you are in one sentence — and use that sentence everywhere, unchanged. Drift is the enemy.
Publish structured data — Organization, LocalBusiness and Service schema tell the machine, in its own language, exactly what you are and where.
Answer real questions in public — every genuine answer you publish is a chance for the model to learn your expertise and attach it to your name.
Earn corroboration — get named by sources the model already trusts. One credible mention outweighs a hundred self-descriptions.
What you can't fake
You cannot bluff a language model into recommending a business that has no real substance behind it. The work is genuine clarity, genuine expertise, genuine proof — structured so machines can read it. That's not a loophole. It's the same thing that earns human trust, expressed in a form AI can parse.
Start before your competitors do
Right now, in most South African categories, almost nobody is doing this deliberately. The model's picture of your industry is half-formed and up for grabs. Shape it now and you become the default answer. Wait, and you'll be trying to rewrite a memory that already belongs to someone else.
